Bristol, RI Wedding on Style Me Pretty

It was such a joy to photograph Margaret and Joe's wedding at Mount Hope Farm. The bride, an NYC art director, designed everything to a T .  She combined her refined aesthetic with the groom's sense of fun for an incredible combination- just like them!  See more on Style Me Pretty today.
All shots here taken with my Contax 645, Portra 400 film.

It takes a "fourth" look

I take pride on my ability to capture subtlety. I love images that are thoughtful, that you want to look at again and again because they continue to offer complexity and interest the more you look at them. I feel that this is one of those images.
But I didn't catch this shot on my first edit… or my second, or my third. Not until I had gone through this wedding four times did I notice I had never marked this shot. Sometimes it takes a "fourth" look!

Country Living November 2013

A recent shoot I did for Country Living! I'm a city girl, but Country Living is one of my favorite magazines! I think of it more as Country Modern... Their interiors tend to have clean lines, but are filled with beautiful natural materials and textures. Just the look I love!

Guests Arriving

Guests file in for the ceremony as sunlight pours through the trees. At Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan, this wedding featured views of the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge. But the view from inside of the trees was just as beautiful, creating a sun-filled outdoor room on a cool fall day.

Carey & Ben's Wedding on Mr. Boddington's Lookbook

Carey and Ben met through soccer! He was the local high school coach, and she had been a college player. It was a fast romance, and they knew they were a perfect fit! They had a lovely Upper West Side wedding for which Carey wore an Amsale dress. Mr. Boddington's studio did their invitations, menus, and programs which were just adorable.

A little rain can be a good thing!

As the saying goes, a little rain on your wedding day is good luck for your marriage! But a rainy day doesn't need to mean that you won't get great pictures, either!
Rain can be many things- a downpour is exciting, a spring shower is romantic. And an umbrella- well, it's the ultimate unifying symbol, no?
I just love this shot from a rainy wedding just a couple of weeks ago. The bride's body is turned-in towards his, as she scoops up her big skirt to keep it out of the puddles. The slightly desaturated color that you get on a rainy day gives the shot a calm, romantic tone. But the bit of motion blur adds a hint of excitement and energy.
This was taken with my Contax 645, and was probably shot at f2.8 a 1/30th.

Our home in Country Living!

Our beautiful kitchen featured in Country Living's September issue! It's their mini-makeover issue, and they turned our cabinets blue!

...not permanently thank goodness! It was done with an adhesive sticker!
Photographed by Alison Gootee. Fun to have this interior shoot take place in my home! I learned a few tricks!

Mount Hope Farm in Bristol, RI

Shooting weddings takes you to many beautiful places! My mother is from the Rhode Island originally, so hydrangea bushes, sailboats, and white seashell driveways always make me feel a little nostalgic for the visits we used to make to my grandparents in the summer. I like to think I've absorbed the New England aesthetic to some extent.
What I love about this shot is that it really captures the place, and all of the elements of the shot fit together so nicely. The slight curve of the bride's skirt mimics the slight bow in the bridge behind her. The bride and groom's heads are perfectly framed against the water. The groom is turned towards her as they walk together, and you can see the sincerity in his body language.
Shot with my Contax 645, 400 Portra film.

Jessica & Aaron

My absolute favorite shot from a recent wedding. This was right after the couple's ceremony, and they were lost in each other.
Shot with Portra 400 film, with my Contax 645.

Backlit Bride

Backlighting is one of my favorite photography techniques. Sometimes the backlight is so bright that you completely lose whatever you were trying to capture in front of it, but sometimes you get something so magical with that sunlight-pouring-through-us kind of feel. This shot is a perfect example of that. There was a good balance of exterior light and interior light, which allowed me to still capture the bride's expression. Rachel had just put on her veil and was about to leave for her ceremony.
This shot was taken with my Rolleiflex, 800 speed color film.
